Spotify has finally introduced a miniplayer to improve the desktop experience as a Premium feature for users—featuring two different designs.

The new feature is located in the bottom right corner of the Spotify desktop player, shrinking the app into controls like volume, back/next tracks, and song information. The player closely resembles the miniplayer that is available for Apple Music and has been a feature desktop users have requested for many years. There are countless user-created Spotify apps on GitHub aimed at re-creating this exact feature. Now it’s here officially as long as you’re a Premium user.

“Whenever I’m working, Spotify is always running in the background. I keep jumping from track-to-track and this means I keep switching between windows. If I have to adjust volume or change the repeat mode, I need to switch to the Spotify window. I bet that you also felt from time to time that there should be a better way to handle these controls?” reads the community announcement.

“Well, we got lucky! That’s what the miniplayer is for! Looks like this nifty feature is designed to give us maximum control over our music and podcasts with minimal intrusion, ensuring the workflow goes undisturbed.”

The new Spotify miniplayer when activated starts in ‘always on top’ mode, so it floats over other applications open on the desktop. It also operates independently of the main Spotify desktop window.

After more than 10 years, the Spotify desktop experience is finally on par with Apple Music. Here’s a quick guide on how to use the Spotify miniplayer.

  1. Open the Spotify desktop app on Windows, Mac, Linux or Chromebook.
  2. Ensure you’re a Spotify Premium subscriber.
  3. Start listening to music and then click the little white square in the bottom-right corner.
  4. Don’t see the icon just yet? Try reinstalling the Spotify app.

The new miniplayer features a video mode so video podcasts and music videos can still appear in ‘floating’ mode while you work.
