Having trouble adding music to your Instagram Story? Maybe Instagram Music search isn’t working? Check out these comprehensive solutions to get back to adding your favorite music to Instagram Stories, posts, and videos.

If you love adding music to your Instagram Stories and posts, you’re definitely not alone. Since the introduction of Instagram Music, it’s easier than ever to add music to your content, whether you’re an average user or a big-name content creator. Even around 60% of brands use music snippets and other interactive elements in their Instagram posts to make them more engaging to users.

But when the feature isn’t working right, what can you do? Many users have reported their share of playback issues and other downtime problems with Instagram Music since the beginning of the year. Here are the best ways to troubleshoot Instagram Music not working correctly so you can get back to adding music to your posts.

Why is Instagram Music Not Working?

While sometimes the issue can be solved by something as simple as checking your internet connection, if you’re planning on traveling — especially internationally — you might encounter geo-restrictions when trying to access music on Instagram. If you regularly travel, or you know you’re going to be traveling soon, make sure you keep the Instagram app (and your device) up to date while preparing for your trip.

If you have the option to download the music you want to use beforehand, that can go a long way to helping to make sure the music is available to use before you run into any geo-restriction issues. However, be cautious in uploading music to Instagram manually, which may expose you to copyright claims.

Check for Updates to Your Instagram App

Outdated versions of apps like Instagram are more likely to encounter problems, including compatibility issues, particularly with newer features such as Instagram Music. You can check for available Instagram updates in the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store, and it’s always recommended to update to the latest versions as soon as possible. Enabling apps to automatically download updates when available can be a big help too.

Check Your Internet Connection

Any app that connects to the internet can run into issues working correctly if your device is in airplane mode or your WiFi or data connection isn’t working. Checking that your connection is strong is a good first step in determining if the issue is specific to Instagram not working.

Clear Your App Data and Cache

Clearing an app’s cache is a great way to refresh it without reinstalling it on your device, removing files the app has downloaded to save time. It can also be a great way to fix any issues with an app.

  1. Tap and hold the Settings app icon.
  2. Select Apps and find Instagram.
  3. Choose Storage and Clear Cache.
  4. Restart the app and sign back in.

If you still find that Instagram is not working or is frequently crashing, ensure your device storage isn’t full. Accessing content-heavy apps like Instagram may require more space on your phone to run efficiently.

Sign Out and Sign Back In

Sometimes signing out of your account and logging back in can fix issues related to Instagram Music and other features.

To sign out of your account:

  1. Go to your Instagram profile and tap the three horizontal lines
  2. Select Settings from the menu
  3. Scroll down and select Log Out
  4. Enter your credentials and log back in
  5. Confirm that Instagram Music is working.

Reinstall the Instagram App

If you’ve tried everything above and Instagram still isn’t working, uninstalling and reinstalling the app should be your next move. Occasionally, an app’s files can become corrupted during an update, so a fresh install will fix most issues with an app that aren’t related to connectivity.

  1. Open the App Store or Play Store and search for Instagram.
  2. Select Instagram and Uninstall under the available options.
  3. Confirm and then click Install to reinstall it.
  4. Sign back in and confirm that Instagram is working.

Switch Instagram Account Types

Some users have reported having issues with Instagram Music after switching from a personal account to a business or creator account, or vice versa. Switching to a different account type may solve any issues you’re having with adding certain music to your Stories.

To switch your Instagram account type:

  1. Go to your profile and go to Settings, then Account
  2. Scroll down and tap Switch to Professional/Creator Account
  3. Follow the same process to switch back to a personal account

If you’ve tried everything above and you’re still having issues with Instagram Music not working, you may have to wait for the problem to be resolved on Instagram’s end.
