Sony Music Entertainment Taiwan expands its relationship with Mando-pop stars WeiBird and Cyndi Wang to help both artists reach new fans in other markets.

By combining forces, Sony Music Entertainment (SME) Taiwan will help WeiBird and Cyndi Wang solidify their positions within the domestic Chinese music industry, as well as reaching new fans elsewhere. Sony Music was light on deal specifics, except to say that these are far-reaching deals that spread beyond Sony’s Taiwanese division.

WeiBird has garnered critical acclaim as a chart-topping Mando-pop artist, with six studio albums, one live album, and two EPs under his belt. Cyndi Wang, widely described as the “Mando-pop Princess,” has consistently churned out pop hits for the last 20 years, continuing to chart as one of the top female pop stars in the region. To celebrate the new partnership, Cyndi released her latest album, Bite Back, with Sony Music.

“Extending my partnership with SME Taiwan feels like the perfect next step to unleash my creative potential,” said WeiBird. “Their commitment to fostering artistic growth aligns perfectly with my vision, and their global network creates an incredible platform to share my music with a wider audience. I’m excited to collaborate with this talented team and explore new artistic possibilities together.”

Last year, WeiBird was handpicked to cover the theme song for the movie “Hello Ghost.” Meanwhile, his hit “Red Scarf,” the theme song for the 2021 Taiwanese fantasy film “Till We Meet Again,” has achieved multiple award recognition and remained on Spotify’s Taiwan Top 50 for an impressive 27 months and counting. The song has also hit No. 1 on multiple Chinese charts.

“The landscape of Mando-pop is undergoing a fascinating transformation,” said Kevin Foo, General Manager at Sony Music Entertainment Taiwan.

“By strengthening our partnership with WeiBird, and welcoming established artists like Cyndi Wang, SME Taiwan is strategically positioned to be a catalyst for this evolution. By merging their exceptional talent with our global network and industry knowledge, we can not only elevate Mando-pop to new heights but also redefine its influence on the international music scene.”

SME Taiwan has a strong standing in the Mando-pop music industry, with an impressive portfolio of artists, including Kumachan, Julia Peng, J.Sheon, Vivian Hsu, and many more. Sony Music Entertainment Taiwan artists made history at the 34th Golden Melody Awards in 2023 with 11 nominations and three major award wins, with Kumachan winning Best Mandarin Album, Julia Peng winning Best Hakka Singer, and A-Lin winning Best Female Singer.
