Rapper Nas (Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones) has joined the creative team behind the Broadway musical adaptation of the 1984 hip-hop film, ‘Beat Street.’

Nas announced his involvement with the musical on June 14 at the 40th anniversary screening of ‘Beat Street’ at the Tribeca Film Festival. “‘Beat Street’ wasn’t just a film—it spread the revolution of hip-hop culture throughout the country and the world,” Nas told the audience.

“It left an indelible mark, inspiring generations of young artists and creating new hip-hop fans alike. It’s a thrill for me to join the creative team of ‘Beat Street,’ bringing the raw energy of hip-hop into the fabric of Broadway. It’s an honor to breathe new life into this iconic work and celebrate its enduring legacy.”

Set in the early 1980s, the film tells the story of an aspiring group of young rappers in South Bronx—from a graffiti artist, DJ, and a break-dancer—pursuing their dreams of coming out on top of the emerging hip-hop scene. ‘Beat Street’ was produced by Harry Belafonte and David V. Picker, with music by both. Steven Hager wrote the story, while Andrew Harris, David Gilbert, and Paul Golding adapted it into a screenplay. The film starred Rae Dawn Chong, Gus Davis, and Jon Chardiet.

It featured appearances by major artists from that era of hip-hop including Doug E. Fresh, DJ Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa & The Sonic Force, The New York City Breakers, The Treacherous Three, Magnificent Force, and many others. The soundtrack for the movie was released in two volumes, produced by Baker. Beat Street Volume One was one of the first rap albums the RIAA certified gold, achieving the feat on July 20, 1984.

Playbill reports ShowTown Theatricals is serving as general managers for the production. Nathan Gehan and Jamison Scott of ShowTown Productions are executive producing.
