Spotify users on Android can now share content to their WhatsApp status, similar to an Instagram Story.
Spotify is rolling out an update for Android users to post their favorite songs, playlists, and podcasts directly to their WhatsApp status, including nifty visuals and instant previews. The update is part of the music streaming giant’s broader efforts to make music sharing across social media platforms more user-friendly.
The update, gradually rolling out worldwide this week, enables users to share any track, album, playlist, podcast, or audiobook to their WhatsApp status directly from the Spotify app. Once shared, the content appears in a nice visual card that shows the title and cover art, alongside an “Open On Spotify” button. WhatsApp friends viewing your status can tap to open the song or listen to a short preview.
It’s a big upgrade from copying URLs, and it makes it much easier for users to showcase what they’re listening to right now, in a format users accustomed to Instagram Stories will be all too familiar with. And speaking of Instagram, Spotify has already enabled the ability to share what you’re listening to through both Notes and Stories, complete with built-in previews.
Spotify is also rolling out similar integration with TikTok, which will let creators share songs, podcasts, and audiobooks inside the app. Likewise, Snapchat users can post Spotify content directly to their Stories or chats.
That focus on social music discovery has expanded to Spotify’s in-app sharing too. The platform enables users to send tracks and podcasts as direct messages to friends within Spotify itself, although that launch hasn’t been without its share of bugs to iron out.
Now, the WhatsApp status integration is rolling out globally for users across both Free and Premium Spotify accounts “in the coming weeks.” So if you don’t see it yet, keep your eyes peeled. Once available, you can find the functionality in the Share menu in the Spotify app.
The music streaming giant has also been introducing weekly listening stats for all users. These weekly Wrapped-style snapshots can be shared from the app and directly to Instagram and WhatsApp in over 60 markets worldwide.
