Top-Level Description.

In response to demand from our readers, we’re beefing up our music industry and music tech coverage to include topics specific to the DIY musician and the indie music economy. The Musician-Focused Journalist will cover a range of topics that matter to DIY and indie musicians, as well as the indie labels, distributors, and other companies that assist them in their journey.

The ideal candidate will cover a range of topics important to artist development and success, for artists across a range of success levels.  If you’re an active musician, that’s a huge plus, though if you have expertise working anywhere within the DIY/indie musician ecosystem, we’d love to talk to you.  Also, we’re looking for experienced writers, preferably with several years of published works to showcase.

Specific Areas of Expertise.

The ideal candidate will write about issues important to musicians, as well as craft how-tos and pro-tip guides to assist musicians and their teams.  Here are just some of the topic areas we’re aiming to expand:

  • Music distribution and rights management.
  • Live touring challenges.
  • Monetization challenges.
  • Proliferating sources of musician income.
  • Songwriting and recording tips.
  • Profiles on successful artists.
  • Legal issues and career pitfalls.

Schedule & Other Details.

We’re looking for a writer that can work on a fairly regular schedule, though most pieces will not be urgent (not breaking daily news).  The exact day-to-day schedule can be arranged and offers considerable flexibility.  We are looking for a serious time commitment though.

In terms of location, we’re based in Santa Monica, CA, though location can be anywhere. We’ve had a lot of success working with remote contributors, though if you are in the Los Angeles area we’d love to have you post-COVID.

To apply, please drop a note to [email protected] with some details about yourself and samples of your work (especially published work).
