Vodafone UK is now preparing an all-you-can-eat subscription service by Christmas, according to information disclosed Monday.
The offering, called MusicStation, is being powered by Omniphone and includes a selection of roughly one million tracks. All four majors are on board, as well as a healthy selection of independents. A range of handsets will be compatible with the offering, including both 2.5G and 3G receivers.
Customers can jump into the offering for a weekly fee of £1.99 ($4.03), a surcharge that will be added to monthly bills. In exchange, subscribers will be given unlimited access to tracks within the closed mobile environment, a controlled system that loosely simulates OTA downloading. The subscription-based approach also enables unlimited sharing between subscribers on the same network, and opens the possibilities on a music-based social network. London-based Omniphone unveiled its offering at 3GSM earlier this year, and quickly paired with Swedish carrier Telenor.
