Coldplay is now offering a free version of their upcoming single, a move designed to generate broader fan awareness.

The single, “Violet Hill,” is now being offered gratis for one week from the Coldplay website (coldplay.com), starting this morning.

Specifically, the track became available at 7:15 am EST (New York), or midday London time, pre-dawn Los Angeles.  The offering beats the official digital street date by one week, and will undoubtedly dampen a-la-carte sales levels.  The album, Viva la Vida, is now being released June 12th.

Additionally, the group is scheduling two free concerts, both in New York and London.  The action is happening at the Brixton Academy on June 16th, and Madison Square Garden on June 23rd.
