Chatter Still Surrounding EMI Music Publishing Play

EMI is living to see another covenant, but sources continue to point a possible acquisition play on EMI Music Publishing.

The time is ripe for a pluck, and joint venture partners KKR and Bertelsmann were reportedly leading the pack.  EMI would offer a game-changing portfolio addition to BMG Rights Management, which recently added Cherry Lane Music.

Information is scrambled at this stage.  Early Tuesday morning, Reuters noted that “a number of parties have expressed interest in parts of EMI’s music publishing business,” including “other private equity firms” outside of KKR.  Sounds like the makings of a derby, though BusinessWeek claims that KKR ended discussions to buy some or all of the record label,” potentially referring to an earlier bid for the recording assets alongside Warner Music Group.

That vaguely leaves publishing on the table, though this is clearly a situation in flux.  None of the companies are offering comment on the matter.  Stay tuned.
