Predicting the crash of that over-leveraged but well-programmed fireball in the sky. But satellite radio continues to plod along and survive, and the latest figures display even more resilience.
In a Wednesday briefing with Digital Music News, Sirius XM Radio disclosed a subscriber tally approaching 19.9 million (19,862,175, to be exact). Net additions during the third quarter were 334,727, triple the add-ons for the same period last year. And since that point last year, subscriber additions have topped 1.3 million.
So, people are actually jumping onto the ship these days, a nice change of pace. And, this is happening against considerable competitive pressures from iPods, smartphones, Pandora, and traditional radio (though HD remains a disappointing competitor).
