Few productions blend the grandeur of cinematic orchestration with the immersive intimacy of theater as seamlessly as Dreams of Dracula. This Off-Broadway sensation, which captivated audiences with its gothic, atmospheric storytelling, owes much of its haunting power to composer Dian Shuai. Known for his work in film and television, Shuai embraced a new challenge: crafting a sweeping, emotionally charged score that would shape the production’s eerie world.
Digital Music News is proud to partner with outside agencies to create opportunities for artists to be visible to the music industry.
When producers Nicole Coady and Jonathan Albert approached Shuai in May 2023, he was immediately drawn to the project. Though he had never extensively composed in the gothic style, the opportunity to explore dark, mysterious soundscapes while working on a Broadway-adjacent production was irresistible.
“I’ve always been fascinated by large-scale, epic orchestration,” Shuai shares. “The combination of gothic atmosphere, cinematic grandeur, and immersive theater made Dreams of Dracula an exciting challenge.”
As the sole composer for the production, Shuai’s vision was clear: to create a score that would complement the narrative and serve as an emotional anchor for the audience. He blended orchestral arrangements with electronic textures, eerie choral elements, and unsettling sound design to reflect the characters’ psychological depth and the supernatural tension at play.
“The music needed to feel both dreamlike and terrifying,” he explains. “I used lush, romantic melodies to contrast with unsettling harmonies and intense percussive moments. The goal was to immerse the audience in Dracula’s world, making them feel the tension and beauty of the story at every turn.”
While Shuai was responsible for composing the entire score, the process was highly collaborative. Working closely with the director, writers, and choreographer, he ensured the music seamlessly intertwined with the production’s movement and staging. With Dreams of Dracula spanning three levels and allowing audiences to roam freely, the score became an essential guide through the experience.
“There were moments where everything came together—the music, choreography, lighting—and the energy was so intense that even I got chills,” Shuai recalls.
The production’s most defining musical moments were Dracula’s transformation of Lucy into a vampire and the climactic final battle. The music heightened the tension and emotional weight of these pivotal scenes, making them unforgettable for audiences.
However, for Shuai, the highlights extended beyond the dramatic moments. “Some of my favorite pieces were Dracula Theme, Renfield’s Puppet Waltz, and Dreams of Dracula Overture—they allowed me to explore thematic development and orchestral storytelling in a deeply fulfilling way.”
Composing over an hour of original music for an Off-Broadway production is no small feat—especially under intense time constraints. With just a month to complete the score, Shuai had to balance writing, producing, and mixing while continuously refining the music to match the evolving production.
“The fast pace of theater required me to be incredibly adaptable,” he says. “There were constant adjustments to ensure the music aligned with the narrative and staging. It was a challenge, but it pushed me creatively in ways I hadn’t experienced before.”
For Shuai, Dreams of Dracula marks a milestone in his career. Having primarily worked in film, television, and concert music, composing for a live musical was an entirely new frontier—one that tested and expanded his creative abilities.
“This was my first live musical, my first immersive theater experience, and my first Off-Broadway show,” he reflects. “What makes it special is how it allowed me to merge different aspects of my musical identity—cinematic orchestration, atmospheric sound design, and theatrical storytelling.”
The response from audiences has been overwhelmingly positive, reaffirming Shuai’s passion for music’s ability to shape an experience. Dreams of Dracula was more than just another project; it was a creative revelation—one that solidified his place as a composer capable of bridging the worlds of film, theater, and immersive storytelling.
