Allison Kane released a music video for “My Spell” on December 8th, 2023, one of four tracks on her upcoming EP “soft girl era.”

The highly anticipated release is expected to drop in May of 2024. The music video follows “Next Life” and “When She Loves Again,” both off of the album. The video for “Next Life” is driven by her true story.

I was looking forward to the cinematography that would bring “My Spell” to life. The video opens with Allison in a very modest maid outfit, half-heartedly performing her duties. At the same time, she attempts to capture the attention of her wealthy and handsome employer, portrayed by Pretty Little Liar’s Charlie McElveen.

As the video progresses, the man of the manor begins to notice Allison, eventually marrying her after an all-too-adorable love note confession. Living up to the song name, Allison will stop at nothing until the male lead is”Under My Spell.”

The high-energy, nostalgic chorus, “You make me feel like I’m somebody else, You make me feel like I’m feeling myself” was accompanied by shots of her doing some vacuuming and singing into a broom, narrating the song lyrics through the events of the story. Sans sex appeal, I personally have missed the days when music videos were narrative-driven as opposed to sex appeal-driven or obscurity-driven.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this newer artist, but with this second music video being story driven in tandem with the song lyrics, penned by Allison herself, I hope she continues this theme of storytelling through her music videos. The Underdog love-at-first-sight trope mirrors real-life connections of people yearning to get noticed by people they love, and the visuals match the lyrics in a clean yet narrative way. It’s something that only Kane is capable of.
