K-pop hitmaker Shinsadong Tiger was found dead at his recording studio over the weekend. He was 40.

His agency TR Entertainment confirmed the news, stating they are currently gathering information about the death. Born Lee Ho-yang, the music producer was found dead by an acquaintance after he could not be reached by phone. He is best known for composing several hit songs in South Korea including 4Minute’s “Hot Issue,” Tiara’s “Roly Poly,” Apink’s “No No No,” EXID’s “Up & Down,” and Momoland’s Bboom Bboom.”

His work is often credited with shaping the style of early 2010s K-Pop with its upbeat, catchy tunes with a strong hook. Lee Ho-yang was born in 1983 in Pohang, a city on South Korea’s southeastern coast.

He had no formal music education, but immersed himself in music from middle school where he played in band and remixed songs with his friends. He debuted as a songwriter in 2004, producing a song called “Man and Woman” for the K-pop band Jadu.

His music took a downturn in the late 2010s after plagiarism accusations over the repetitive nature of his music—to which he denied. Instead of writing songs, he turned his energy to producing and helped form several K-pop girl groups including EXID and Tri.be.

“I’m so saddened to tell you the news. Producer Shinsadong Tiger (Lee Ho-yang) suddenly died on February 23, 2024. Please refrain from speculating online on behalf of the bereaved families,” reads the statement released by his agency.

“A special service will be set up at Seoul’s St. Mary’s Hospital, with only family relatives and colleagues attending. The members of Tri.be are in a great state of shock and sadness over the loss of Shinsadong Tiger.”

“Since it is the last album that Shinsadong Tiger prepared and released with Tri.be during his lifetime, the broadcasting of the new album—Diamond—will continue with respect for him. Since Tri.be’s debut, all members will do their best to make the last album produced by Shinsadong Tiger shine brilliantly.”
