A Brazilian singer has died after being electrocuted while performing on-stage. Ayres Sasaki was performing at the Solar Hotel when the accident happened.

Sasaki was performing at the hotel in Salinópolis in northern Brazil when a fan jumped on stage to hug him. The combination of the wet hug and a nearby power cable resulted in a fatal shock—it’s unclear how the fan became soaking wet. Speaking to local media, Sasaki’s aunt said: What we know is that his show was scheduled for a specific time and was moved up, but we are contacting people who were with him at the moment to understand how everything happened. We will gather all the information and in a statement that we will release to the press.”

Brazil’s Civil Police say they are investigating the matter, while the Solar Hotel issued a statement on the tragic death. “We are fully dedicated to providing support to his family and taking the necessary measures. We reaffirm our commitment to fully cooperating with the competent authorities for the proper clarification of the events.”

Sasaki is highly regarded in Brazil’s rock community, with fellow singer and close friend Adriano Freitas praising his talent. “He was the best singer and guitarist in Belem. A great friend, family oriented, attentive to his friendships, and to those who appreciated his work. Sasaki is survived by his wife Mariana, whom he married just eleven months ago. He is remembered by his fans as the ‘king of encores,’ often playing back to back sets.

Following news of the singer’s death, tributes began pouring in on his Instagram page from fans. “May you rest in peace. Gone way too soon. So tragic, sending love and prayers to his family and friends,” reads one fan’s message. “Your music will live on. God bless. Peace and love always,” reads another.
