Are new Spotify social sharing features coming to Instagram? A recent report from an app reverse engineer suggests Instagram may be getting a ‘continuous share’ feature.

The new features seems to indicate that both Meta and Spotify are testing a feature to allow users to continuously share their music through Instagram’s Notes. Alessandro Paluzzi first spotted the new feature and posted screenshots of it on Threads. Spotify is always testing new concepts, but integration with Instagram in which music ‘continuously’ streams is a new one. It’s also unclear if the feature will ever make it into a live version of Spotify or Instagram—often times features are scrapped.

“Share from Spotify,” the new prompt at the bottom of the screen reads. “Continuously share what you’re listening to. You can stop sharing at any time,” the message adds. Instagram Notes was first introduced in 2022 as a way for Instagram users to share 30-second clips with their followers. 30-second song clips have been supported in all markets where Instagram has music licensing rights.

The feature is similar to one that already exists between Spotify and Facebook—which may be part of the reason Instagram is receiving focus. While Facebook’s monthly active users (MAUs) continues to grow around the world, younger generations are participating more on other social networks like TikTok and Instagram. Spotify’s ‘Connect with Facebook’ feature allows you to see what Facebook friends are streaming in the Spotify desktop app.

Spotify has focused on improving the community aspects of its app—potentially to compete with YouTube and TikTok. It has added the ability to comment on podcasts, and the ability to create rich user profiles more reminiscent of the information social media networks collect about their users. Neither Spotify nor Meta responded to TechCrunch’s requests for comments about the feature.
