Instrument manufacturer Roland unveils Melody Flip, an AI-based melody-generation software based on research from Sony Computer Science Laboratories.

Roland, an instrument manufacturer best known for its drum machines and synthesizers, has debuted a new melody-generation software, which taps research from Sony Computer Science Laboratories (Sony CSL). Melody Flip aims to combine Roland’s hardware expertise with Sony CSL’s robust music creation research and “expand creative possibilities.” The software also represents Roland’s “vision of technology as a partner that coexists with the creative process.”

Specifically, Melody Flip is not aimed at newbie creators, but instead seeks to enable music producers to treat technology like an “active collaborator.” The timing is apt, given increasing concern over what role AI should be permitted to play within the music creation process and the broader creator ecosystem. Roland views such tools not as a replacement for an artist, but as an amplification of their process, “supporting a workflow where human intent, taste, and creativity remain at the core, with technology acting as a partner or co-creator, rather than a main creator.”

“Melody Flip respects the sensibilities and individuality of the user while offering fresh melodic ideas and opening new possibilities in music production,” Roland’s statement explained. “Throughout the development process, Roland collaborated with artists to ensure the experience reflects how musicians actually create, experiment, and refine ideas in the studio.”

Users can import an audio file, and Melody Flip’s technology analyzes the structure, BPM, key, chord progression, genre, mood, and other aspects of its “musical DNA,” matching those characteristics against a library of around 300 creative palettes. Each of these represents a predefined style or tonal direction. Producers can “pick, tweak, chop, or rebuild” these however they want.

“Roland has always been committed to supporting the evolution of music culture through electronic musical instruments and production tools,” added Roland CEO and Representative Director Masahiro Minowa. “Melody Flip represents a significant step forward in the era of responsibly developed AI, introducing a future in which technology and people work together and elevate creativity. As we move forward, Roland will continue to expand the boundaries of musical expression with innovative products and services that amplify creators’ instincts and connect human sensitivity with the full potential of technology.”

Melody Flip is available for macOS and Windows, and works as a plugin within major DAWs. Users can export generated melodies, as well as chord, bass, and drum parts, in both audio and MIDI formats. This is designed to make for a simple transition from idea sketching to full-scale music production.

Like other Roland software products, Melody Flip will be delivered via the Roland Cloud Manager for Roland Cloud members. A free trial will launch in May. The company vows a commitment to the responsible development of AI experiences that empower human creativity and is a founding supporter of and adheres to The Principles for Music Creation with AI.
