Universal Pictures announces the release of “Snoop,” the “definitive” biopic of artist, mogul, and rap icon Snoop Dogg, on August 6, 2027.
On Tuesday, Universal Pictures announced a release date for Snoop, directed by Craig Brewer (“Song Sung Blue,” “Hustle & Flow”), on August 6, 2027. The project, said to be the “definitive biopic” of the artist, mogul, and rap icon, is based on Brewer’s rewrite of Joe Robert Cole’s original script. Jonathan Daviss (“Outer Banks”) is set to star.
It’s the first project under Death Row Pictures’ deal with NBCUniversal Entertainment. The film will be produced by Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer of 8 Mile fame, Snoop Dogg, and Death Row Pictures President Sara Ramaker. Of course, the project will incorporate music from Snoop’s vast catalog of hits.
Mike Knobloch, NBCUniversal’s president of music and publishing, will supervise the project’s music, while Ryan Jones, Universal’s SVP of Production Development, will oversee the project.
It’s a big year for music-focused biopics, with Lionsgate and Universal’s Michael dominating at the domestic and global box office, so it makes sense that it’s an area in which Snoop wants to try his hand.
“After my brothers got to tell their story with Straight Outta Compton, now it’s my turn,” Snoop said on stage at CinemaCon, joined by Daviss, who will play him. “My director, Craig Brewer, he just showed us how hard it is out here for a pimp from Hustle & Flow. And then last year, he got us all singing ‘Sweet Caroline.’”
“My movie is going to be rated R, I guarantee that,” he added. “So get your parents’ permission.”
For nearly 30 years, Snoop Dogg has reigned supreme across hip-hop and popular culture. In addition to his extensive career in music, the multi-hyphenate is an actor, media personality, and serial entrepreneur. He has his fingers in a lot of pies across tech, entertainment, lifestyle, global consumer brands, food and beverage, and the cannabis industry.
His landmark debut on Dr. Dre’s first solo single, “Deep Cover,” was followed by another feature on Dre’s seminal release, The Chronic. His own debut album, Doggystyle, in 1993 featured such hit singles as “What’s My Name?” and “Gin and Juice.” Snoop has sold more than 35 million albums worldwide and is a 17-time Grammy nominee, American Music Award, and Primetime Emmy Award winner.
