Voice-Swap Joins DDEX, Eyes ‘Consent and Authorization Metadata’ Contributions as AI Vocals Become ‘Part of Real Production and Commercial Workflows’

With an eye on making “interoperable metadata” the norm for AI-powered voice models, Voice-Swap has joined the Digital Data Exchange (DDEX) as a full member.

DDEX and London-headquartered Voice-Swap made the unexpected announcement official today, describing the newly minted member as “the first dedicated AI voice company to participate in” the standards-development process.

With questions still surrounding precisely what’s copyrightable in the AI-voice realm – and with a number of moving parts to factor for in the rapidly evolving space – time will tell what these standards look like in practice.

But as summarized by Ausrine Skarnulyte-led Voice-Swap, it intends to weigh in on requirements such as “voice-model identity, consent and authorisation metadata, usage-scoped permissions, provenance and rights reporting” moving forward.

Of course, the broad focus (and Voice-Swap’s DDEX membership generally) implies that AI voice is expected to become increasingly prevalent – or, in the involved parties’ own words, to become “part of established production, distribution and commercial workflows.”

On this front, SoundCloud-partnered Voice-Swap has been expanding throughout 2026, including with the April launch of creator- and advertiser-geared text-to-speech product Voiceover_Studio, the August arrival of “instant voice cloning,” and a growing “roster” of artists whose voices are available to license.

Moreover, today’s rights-related news didn’t come out of left field. Back in March, Voice-Swap signed on as an initial participant in the World Intellectual Property Office’s Technical Exchange Network alongside the non-Sony majors and others.

And it was only one month ago that Voice-Swap chief strategy and impact officer Michael Pelczynski penned an in-depth blog post exploring the perceived need to prioritize AI authorization, not just recognition.

Addressing his company’s DDEX membership, the former SoundCloud higher-up Pelczynski touched on several of the same key points.

“AI voice is becoming part of real production and commercial workflows, which means its underlying permissions need to become legible to the wider digital supply chain,” Pelczynski said. “The industry needs to know whose identity is represented, which model was used, who authorised that use and whether it remains within the permitted scope.

“We see DDEX as exactly the right environment to help make that information interoperable at scale,” the Rostrum Pacific digital strategy EVP concluded.

And in remarks of his own, DDEX secretariat Mark Isherwood (whose organization, perhaps not coincidentally, today unveiled a new standard in the “Entity Cluster Message Suite”) noted the “new perspective” offered by Voice-Swap.

“Voice-Swap will clearly provide a particular focus on AI voice expertise,” Isherwood continued. “This will assist DDEX in ensuring the standards it develops relating to the operational requirements around AI are as extensive as possible and meet the broadest possible requirements of the industry.”
