Album Sales Through Groupon: Desperate or Creative?

Hip Hop/R&B artist Ciara recently offered a Groupon 2-CD bundle for $13.99 to include Ciara, the album, and Playlist: The Very Best of Ciara at a 30% discount. Sony Music is also selling vinyl records of select artists’ albums such as the 20/20 Experience by Justin Timberlake and Live at Legends by Buddy Guy for either $19.99 or $22.99 depending on the album.

Ciara’s Groupon site states that over 150 were bought, meaning around $2,100 plus was made in this effort. So far, Sony Music has sold over 30 records, a total of roughly $600- $700. It is clear that these sales are hardly lucrative since goods are only available in very limited quantity and time, so what’s driving this small marketing effort?

How many people does Groupon send it’s solitication to? Maybe it’s about reach via Groupon email list to establish Ciara ‘brand” and not about music sales.
