African Digital Music Service Boomplay Finalizes Its Licensing Deal with Warner Music Group

Boomplay continues scoring licensing agreements with major labels.

Several months ago, Universal Music Group (UMG) made a strong play in the African market.

The global music company had unveiled a licensing deal with Boomplay, a major African streaming music and download service.

The multi-year deal allows Boomplay to distribute UMG’s music on its streaming and download platform across multiple countries.  These include Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda, and Zambia.

Boomplay is largely unknown in the U.S. and Europe, but it has remained quite successful on the African continent.  As of February, Boomplay has 42 million users.  The company claims to add 2 million more each month.

Sounds impressive, though the total number of subscribers and music downloads remain undisclosed.  Boomplay was first founded in 2015 and is owned by Transsnet Music Limited, a Chinese company.

The app offers daily, weekly, and monthly subscription plans.  Users can also purchase and download songs using Coins.

With the UMG deal, Boomplay could start offering works from the music company’s extensive catalog.  This includes songs from artists such as Drake, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, and more.

Now, another major music company has struck a deal with the service.

Partnering with WMG.

According to details shared by the company, Boomplay has closed a direct licensing agreement with Warner Music Group (WMG).

The terms of the deal allow the African digital music service to distribute WMG’s catalog of over one million songs to users in ten countries – Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia.

The move also allows WMG artists to receive more exposure in the region.

Speaking about the deal, Joe He, CEO of Boomplay, explained,

Major deals with internationally recognized partners such as Warner Music continue to push us closer to our aim of building the largest and the most reliable online music distribution platform in Africa.

We want every music lover in the region to be able to access any song or video, anytime and wherever they are.

Alfonso Perez-Soto, WMG’s Executive Vice President of Eastern Europe, Middle East, and Africa, added,

The streaming service already has tremendous reach across the continent, yet they continue to expand exponentially.

It’s an opportunity that can’t be missed for our artists to make a whole new legion of fans.

He also thanked Warner executives Charlie White, Marc Latilla, and Reni Adadevoh for getting the deal “over the line.”

Boomplay now has over 5 million songs and thousands of videos from both local and international acts.
