Russian soprano Anna Netrebko will not be performing at the Met Opera or Berlin State Opera.

The Russian opera singer refused to distance herself from Putin, which forced this outcome. “It is a great artistic loss for the Met and for opera,” the company’s general manager, Peter Gelb, told CNN in a statement. “Anna is one of the greatest singers in Met history, but with Putin killing innocent victims in Ukraine there was no way forward.”

Ukrainian sporano Liudmyla Monastryska will replace her in “Turandot.” Her replacement for “Don Carlo” will be announced at a later date, according to the Met. The Berlin State Opera says Anna Netrebko has withdrawn from a new production of “Turandot” there.

“Anna Netrebko has withdrawn her participation in the new production of ‘Turandot’ in June 2022. This is the result after the Staatsoper Unter den Linden asked the artist to distance herself from the war that the Russian government has launched against Ukraine, which violates international law,” the statement reads.

“We value Anna Netrebko as an outstanding artist, and we have a long-standing artistic partnership with her. At the same time, in view of this brutal war, we see no possibility for continuation of this collaboration.”

“It is important for us to emphasize that Russian artists will continue to perform with us and that it is especially important now not to prejudge thoughtlessly and to strengthen the cohesion in our society. At this time, our sympathy goes unreservedly to all those who are suffering as a result of this catastrophe.

Anna Netrebko has withdrawn from several other opera productions this week. The Gran Teatre del Liceu, and the Bayerische Staatsoper. “After careful consideration, I have made the extremely difficult decision to withdraw from concert life until further notice,” Netrebko said in a statement shared by German concert promoter River Concert. The Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg rescheduled a Netrebko concert until September after the announcement.
