Tyler, the Creator has withdrawn from Lollapalooza and Outside Lands, which have tapped as replacements Megan Thee Stallion and Sabrina Carpenter, respectively.

33-year-old Tyler, the Creator took to social media today to disclose the news, and unsurprisingly, a number of fans are less than thrilled with the unexpected development. Lollapalooza 2024 is set to kick off on August 1st, while this year’s Outside Lands installment is scheduled to begin eight days after that.

“i hate saying this but i have to cancel [my performances at] lollapalooza and outside lands,” Tyler, the Creator wrote of the pullouts. “i made a commitment that i can no longer keep, and that bums me out knowing how excited folks were.

“that is not sexy at all. please please forgive me or call me names when you see me in person. Love,” concluded the Hawthorne, California, native, who’d been expected to perform on the first day of Lollapalooza and the second day of Outside Lands.

(Regarding the reasons for the exit, Chicago’s Lollapalooza only indicated that “Tyler, the Creator will not be able to perform this year,” and San Francisco’s Outside Lands chalked up the news “to personal reasons.”)

As mentioned, Megan Thee Stallion, who only entertained Bonnaroo 2024 attendees four days back, is currently on the road for her Hot Girl Summer Tour, and was part of Outside Lands 2023, has signed on as a Lollapalooza headliner.

Though the Outside Lands headliner Sabrina Carpenter isn’t touring at present, she’s lined up a number of shows, the first booked for late September, in support of her forthcoming Short n’ Sweet.

With the concert series consisting mainly of arena stops, it’ll be worth closely monitoring its commercial results given the live sector’s recent ups and downs. The latter now include multiple high-profile tour cancellations, dramatically reduced ticket prices, and a growing collection of shelved festivals.

Importantly, today’s biggest festivals haven’t been spared from the apparent sub-sector woes, which, given the above news, evidently encompass more than attendance concerns. In what was in retrospect a harbinger of crowd-based entertainment’s relative difficulties to come, Coachella in April rather surprisingly failed to sell out.

Whatever the causes of the sales slowdown – economic factors, a post-pandemic reset for live, and more stand out – Outside Lands and Lollapalooza organizers don’t seem to believe that talent selection deserves much blame. Tyler, the Creator also headlined Coachella 2024, and Sabrina Carpenter helped kick off both the Goldenvoice-organized event’s weekends.
