New York State lawmakers are considering legislation that would ban virginity testing. The move comes after controversial comments made by rapper T.I.

Last month, the rapper revealed that he takes his 18-year-old daughter to the gynecologist every year. That is, to verify her virginity, of course.  Predictably, the remarks sparked national outrage about the procedure. Scientists have long debunked the myth of a hymen test to ensure that a woman is a virgin.

The new legislation, sparked by the outrage, would ban medical practitioners from performing virginity examinations. Any professionals who do perform the procedure would be subject to penalties. Virginity tests performed outside of a medical setting would also be considered sexual assault under the legislation.

The bill already has three co-sponsors in the New York State Assembly. A companion bill was introduced to the New York State Senate by Senator Roxanne J. Persaud.

“The invasive procedure of a virginity examination violates the sanctity and purity of a female. Whether a child or adult, this breaches not only moral grounds but also the privacy entitled to a female and their doctor.”

The procedure is still conducted in some countries as a requirement for marriage. The World Health Organization recommended the procedure be banned last year, describing it as unethical.

Rapper T.I. was recently confronted about ‘Hymen-gate’ on an episode of Red Table Talk. He said his daughter expressed concern to him for talking about the issue so publicly. T.I. said the reports about the issue were ‘sensationalized’ to make it seem worse than it is.

“I never said I was in any exam room. That is an assumption; that is a falsity. I never said it was being done present-day as an 18-year-old. I never said that her mother wasn’t present.

“Our women, black women, are the most unprotected … women on the planet. I’m being criticized because I’m willing to go above and beyond to protect beyond mine.”

T.I.’s daughter liked several comments on Twitter criticizing her father’s actions. She even went so far as to unfollow him on Twitter after the hymen test comments.
