Post Malone held a Nirvana virtual tribute tour on YouTube, raising nearly $3 million for coronavirus relief.
Malone performed his rendition of 13 Nirvana songs including, “Drain You,” “Come As You Are,” and “Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle.”
“We’re here to play some songs for you, and just, you know, try our best to stay at home and still make some rock and roll and party hard,” Malone told his viewers.
Malone sang and played electric guitar, accompanied by three band members. Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker participated in the 80-minute live stream. So far, the live stream has garnered $2.6 million in donations. Google has pledged to match the amount of money donated at a 2:1 rate, up to $5 million.
Post Malone performed the virtual concert for coronavirus relief from his home in Salt Lake City.
He apologized for his stage while standing in front of a counter and dishes. “This is live from my house, and I apologize if my shit is dirty,” he said. “I have all the time in the world to fucking clean.” Kurt Kobain’s wife, Courtney Love, tuned in to the stream to listen.
Post Malone joins a chorus of artists who have organized charity concerts for relief funds. Leading the pack is Lady Gaga, who threw the huge One World Together virtual concert to raise funds for the WHO. Andrea Bocelli also used his voice to deliver a powerful Easter message in a live-streamed concert from an empty cathedral in Italy.
Other artists like Travis Scott are embracing the new norm of social distancing. His virtual Fortnite concert, Astronomical, shattered concurrent player records. Over 12 million people tuned in to hear Scott perform on a virtual stage. He shattered the previous record set by Marshmello last year, who garnered 10 million concurrent players.
