Rapper Gucci Mane has tweeted that he’s getting his own Gucci brand in a new fashion partnership.
The rapper then followed up with a joke referencing his upcoming contract renewal with Atlantic Records. “Should I renew my contract with Gucci, or go independent?” the rapper tweets. Neither Gucci Mane nor Gucci has responded to the tweets.
Gucci Mane put Atlantic Records on blast in a series of now-deleted tweets just a few weeks ago. He announced that he’s leaving Atlantic Records next month, calling the label “polite racists.”
“Leaving #AtlanticRecords July 3rd, these crackers polite racist #SoIcySummer,” Gucci Mane tweeted. Shortly after the tweet went live, it was deleted. In another tweet, Gucci Mane called on other artists to strike.
“All artists let’s go on strike, fuck these racist ass labels burn then [sic] down too. #BlackLivesMatter #BlackExecMatter fuck these crackers?” the rapper wrote. That tweet has since been deleted, too. The rapper also took down Gucci itself in his Twitter fury.
“To all snitches and my haters and the most polite racist ever @gucci I pray y’all die of coronavirus,” the rapper tweeted on June 11th, 2020. That tweet is also deleted, though screenshots of it exist.
Gucci Mane has been signed with Atlantic Records since 2007. In 2013, he aired his beef and sent insults toward the label and its executives. Shortly afterward, Atlantic dropped him from its roster, leading the rapper to apologize and blame codeine abuse. Atlantic later re-signed the rapper in 2016.
Gucci Mane’s public dispute with Atlantic Records this year isn’t the first time he’s been upset. Back in 2017, he said he planned to leave Atlantic and go independent. “I’m going 100% independent and will drop a mixtape every other day,” he tweeted in 2018.
That obviously didn’t happen, since Gucci Mane is back to tooting the same horn in 2020.
Instead of making independence a reality, the rapper signed a $10 million extension with his label. “Thank you Atlantic Records for the 10 million extension, I appreciate it sincerely,” he tweeted on November 8th, 2017.
Gucci Mane is now gearing up to drop his compilation project Gucci Mane Presents: So Icey Summer. That project is dropping on July 3rd – which is also the date the rapper says he’ll leave Atlantic.
Atlantic Records has not publicly commented on any of the rapper’s tweets. Will they drop him for good or offer another $10 million extension? Who knows.
