NBA Youngboy attorneys are proposing an elaborate scheme should he be released on bond.
That scheme includes building a recording studio at the 21-year-old rapper’s home. The plan also includes hiring a security firm staffed by former soldiers to patrol the grounds. But it sounds like judges aren’t having any part of that idea.
Chief U.S. District Judge Shelly Dick rejected the idea that the rapper should be released on certain bond conditions. She called Kentrell Gaulden “inclined towards reckless, illegal, dangerous behavior” and said that no combination of bond conditions could ensure the community’s safety.
The rapper was indicted in March by a grand jury on charges of possessing a firearm as a felon. He was taken into custody by federal agents in Los Angeles after a brief car chase, and returned to Louisiana. Gaulden was booked into a St. Martin Parish jail in April and has remained behind bars awaiting trial since.
The rapper was present in court on Monday morning for the detention hearing. NBA Youngboy’s latest album hit number one on the Billboard charts and has been streamed more than 186 million times. Gaulden’s attorneys urged Judge Dick to reconsider her previous judgement.
His attorneys argued that he would pose no danger to himself or others if placed under house arrest. Gaulden recently purchased a home in northern Utah to be near the family of a childhood tutor. His attorneys point out that he has avoided engaging in criminal behavior while visiting in Utah.
Prosecutors argue that while he has not been arrested for crimes in Utah, he has been arrested for various infractions while in contact with those loved ones. In February 2017, Gaulden pleaded guilty to aggravated assault with a firearm in connection to a non-fatal drive-by shooting in Baton Rouge. That shooting occurred a few days before the rapper turned 17.
In 2018, the rapper was arrested on a domestic violence charge. He eventually pled guilty to misdemeanor battery. In 2019, he was involved in a shooting in Miami on Mother’s Day that left a bystander dead.
Gunmen opened fire on the rapper outside the Trump International Hotel. Members of his crew who were legally armed returned fire, fatally striking an innocent person. Miami-Date police ruled that Gaulden’s associates were acting in self-defense. Even while detained in St. Martin Parish jail, Gaulden has been involved in fights.
