EDM star Bassnectar says he’s “stepping back” from the music industry after sexual assault allegations.
Last week, a new Instagram account began surfacing the damning details. The account, called ‘Evidence Against Bassnectar,’ began reposting users’ stories accusing the DJ of assault. Some of the stories involved grooming young female fans, with some female collaborators supporting the behavior.
Bassnectar, real name Loren Ashton, finally responded to the allegations over the weekend.
“I am stepping back from my career, and I am stepping down from my position of power and privilege in this community because I want to take responsibility and accountability,” he said in a Twitter statement. “I feel intense compassion for anyone I may have hurt and I truly hope you allow me a chance to work together toward healing.”
Bassnectar says he’s taking responsibility for his behavior, but his comments are why the callout account was created. In a statement he posted to Twitter on June 30th, he said his “own romantic relationships and interactions have been positive, consensual, legal and loving.” Shortly after that statement, the Instagram account began reposting allegations.
Bassnectar denies all allegations circulated by the account, but apologizes for ‘past actions.’
“The rumors you are hearing are untrue, but I realize some of my past actions have caused pain, and I am deeply sorry,” he wrote. “I am handing off our non-profit Be Interactive to a diverse team to continue without my involvement moving forward. Sometime in the future, I may share more thoughts on these matters. But for now, please take care of each other, and I wish you all the brightest future.”
The videos and accounts highlighted on the Evidence Against Bassnectar Instagram account tell a different story.
One recording of Lorin Ashton asking his victim if their relationship is statutory rape is especially telling. Instead of answering, Ashton asks her if she wants his accountability to result in going to jail. Many of the girls who accuse him allege that he took advantage of his position of trust.
Ashton claims the girls were college-aged, but most of them were underage. The allegations are severe enough that it has caused Bassnectar to step back from his non-profit organization.
Bassnectar is often considered a social justice warrior among fans. He has contributed to numerous online activism causes, raising awareness and donating money. He has also been active in encouraging his supporters to register to vote. Occasionally, his website drops think pieces on his political opinions and anti-racism stance.
